Whether you are attending a political event or any other event, you should be prepared for what to do to protect yourself and others if violence breaks out.
The year 2020 was a rollercoaster for everyone, and that continued into 2021. Among other things, we witnessed how a gathering that was originally meant to be peaceful can turn into a violent riot in moments. Violence erupted in cities across the country in 2020 and is still ongoing in at least one major U.S. city today. Whether you are attending a political event or any other event, you should be prepared for what to do to protect yourself and others if violence breaks out.
Here are a few of our tips for what you need to do if a situation turns violent.
The most important thing is to prepare in advance. You should communicate with your group ahead of time to determine a safe meeting place and ensure everyone in the group has each other’s phone numbers pre-programmed. You should also charge your phone ahead of time, and bring an extra battery or charger with you. Also, carry cash just in case.
If you do see violence break out, stay calm and identify the closest exit or escape route. Gather your group and make sure they are safely out of harm’s way. If others need help, do what you can to help without putting yourself in additional danger.
